In the Beginning.....

1956
In the spring, CJ Stevens, then Director of Radio and TV at the University of Kansas City, submits a budget request for the establishment and operation of an educational FM broadcast station. This request is turned down.

In the fall, Stevens and Sam Scott decide to raise money outside the university and, with the approval of then President McGrath, a modest fundraising campaign is undertaken and a separate FM fund is established. A $700 gift, designated for a radio station, is given to the university. Used equipment is donated; necessary materials are purchased; a transmitter is constructed.

From a very early fundraising letter....

"I am appealing to a rather large number of people in the Greater Kansas City area who, I believe, are interested in the broadcast of programs of fine music and intelligent discussion." --Cj Stevens, Director of Radio and Television
